Decisive⦠or Just Reactive?
Jocko and Echelon Front often talk about taking action, moving decisively, and not waiting passively for someone else to solve the problem. It's important. As men, we need initiative. Leaders need to move. Families and organizations suffer when men become passive.
Mark Odland:But here's the distinction I wanna make. Decisive action is not the same as emotional reactivity. A lot of men confuse the two. They feel pressure, and they move fast. Frustration, and they make a decision.
Mark Odland:They feel disrespected and they confront. They feel anxious and they change the plan. They call themselves decisive. That's what they tell themselves. But sometimes they're actually just reacting.
Mark Odland:True initiative comes from clarity. Reactivity comes from activation. And that difference matters. Because reactivity often creates more problems than passivity. A reactive leader creates chaos.
Mark Odland:A reactive husband creates distance between him and his wife. A reactive father creates fear, not respect, fear. A reactive business owner burns trust. And because he is active, he may think that he's leading. But movement is not the same as leadership.
Mark Odland:Speed is not the same as wisdom. Intensity is not the same as strength. Sometimes the strongest thing a man can do is slow down enough to know why he is actually moving in that direction in the first place, to ask some questions. Am I acting from clarity, or am I acting because I feel threatened? Am I solving an actual problem, or am I trying to just discharge anxiety?
Mark Odland:Am I leading, or am I reacting? These can be uncomfortable questions, but they're necessary. A lot of trauma patterns look like action. Fight responses look like action. Control looks like action.
Mark Odland:Overfunctioning, workaholism, they can all look like action, but not all action is healthy. Some action is just avoidance in motion. That's why internal awareness is not soft. It's tactical. If you don't know what's driving you, you can't fully trust your movement.
Mark Odland:At Lion Counseling, I have the honor of helping men distinguished between decisive leadership and emotionally driven reaction. And the goal is not to become passive. The goal is clean action, strong action, action that comes from a grounded place. If you're a man of action, but your actions sometimes create damage that you later regret, you can book a clarity call at escapethecagenow.com. Thanks.
